Why Silicone Won’t Fix Every Caravan Leak

Silicone might seem like a quick fix when you find a leak in your caravan, but it is not always the right solution. In some cases, adding more sealant can trap moisture, hide the real problem and make the repair more expensive later.

At Carafix, we regularly see caravan leaks that started small but became much bigger because the real cause was never properly repaired.

Why caravan owners reach for silicone

When a caravan owner sees a small gap, crack or leak, silicone can feel like the fastest and cheapest answer. It is easy to buy, easy to apply and it can look like the problem has been fixed.

The issue is that silicone often only covers the visible part of the problem. If water has already found its way behind panels, around windows, through roof seals or into joins, simply adding more sealant may not stop the leak at the source.

Why silicone is not always the answer

Not every caravan leak is caused by a simple surface gap. Leaks can come from old seals, movement in the caravan body, roof joins, hatches, windows, vents or previous repair work.

Adding silicone over the top can sometimes make things worse. It may trap moisture inside the wall or roof cavity, make it harder to find the real leak, or create a messy repair area that needs to be stripped back later.

What can happen if a caravan leak is not fixed properly

A small leak can quickly turn into a bigger repair if it is ignored or patched incorrectly. Water can damage wall panels, flooring, timber, insulation and internal fittings.

Common warning signs include soft spots, swelling, staining, musty smells, mould, bubbling surfaces or damp cupboards. If you notice any of these signs, it is worth getting your caravan inspected before the damage spreads.
